  • Here we report that infusion of sialyl-Lewis X, a ligand for P-selectin, dramatically reduced lung injury and diminished the tissue accumulation of neutrophils, whereas irrelevant oligosaccharides had no such effects [20].
  • ELAM-1 recognizes the sialyl-Lewis X (sialyl-Lex) determinant, NeuAc alpha 2-3Gal beta 1-4(Fuc alpha 1-3)GlcNAc-, a granulocyte carbohydrate also found on the surface of some tumor cell lines [21].
  • Carbohydrate structural analysis showed that 6-sulfo sialyl Lewis X, a dominant ligand for L-selectin, was almost completely absent from the high endothelial venules of these mutant mice, whereas the amount of unsulfated sialyl Lewis X was much greater [22].
  • The dominant form of CLA on T cells is immunologically distinct from the major neutrophil ELAM-1 ligand, the sialyl Lewis x (sLex) antigen (NeuAc alpha 2-3Gal beta 1-4[Fuc alpha 1-3]GlcNAc), which is absent, weakly expressed, or masked on T cells [23].
  • These changes in leukocyte behavior were blocked by monoclonal antibodies against P-selectin (PB 1.3) and against sialyl Lewis X-like carbohydrates (2H5) [24].
