Disease relevance of Nursing Homes

Psychiatry related information on Nursing Homes

High impact information on Nursing Homes

  • CONTEXT: Alzheimer disease special care units (SCUs) in nursing homes are increasingly prevalent, but little is known about their effects on residents' outcomes [11].
  • Using a series of logistic analyses, the shift in location of death from hospitals to nursing homes was found to be more pronounced after implementation of the PPS [12].
  • Of 2135 elderly residents of nursing homes in Arkansas (mean age, 79.4 years) who have been treated with isoniazid for prevention of tuberculosis, data from 1935 were suitable for analysis [13].
  • In a series of 429 white subjects from two Jewish nursing homes, an association of APOE4 with AD was found only in patients homozygous for the G,C allele of DLST [14].
  • In this period, the proportion of MRSA cases acquired in our institution decreased from 50.0% in 1999 to 6.1% in 2002 (P<.001), whereas the proportion of MRSA cases transferred from other hospitals (P<.001) and nursing homes (P = .03) increased [15].

Associations of Nursing Homes with chemical compounds

  • The predominance of methicillin-resistant S. aureus infections in these large hospitals may be due to the large numbers of patients at high risk of infection and to the interhospital spread of the organism by the transfer of infected patients and house staff from similar hospitals or from nursing homes [26].
  • Amantadine-resistant influenza A in nursing homes. Identification of a resistant virus prior to drug use [27].
  • Among 64637 patients with CHF admitted to all nursing homes in 5 states between 1992 and 1995, we identified 19492 patients taking either an ACE inhibitor (n = 4911) or digoxin (n = 14890) [28].
  • CONCLUSIONS: Results of this work suggest that longterm use of haloperidol, thioridazine, and lorazepam in nursing homes to manage agitation should be closely monitored for their efficacy [29].
  • Mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcidiol) was 10.8 +/- 4.4 nmol/L (27 +/- 11 ng/mL) in women living in nursing homes and was similar to that of free-living young (11.3 +/- 4.2 nmol/L, or 28 +/- 10 ng/mL) and elderly (11.5 +/- 3.2 nmol/L, or 29 +/- 8 ng/mL) women [3].

Gene context of Nursing Homes

  • A cohort of elderly Norwegians dying in nursing homes in the Oslo region have been genotyped for the Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene [30].
  • There was movement of some respondents into nursing homes by the Wave 2 interview [31].
  • RESULTS: The prevalence of MRSA colonization was significantly higher in the VA NHCU than in the community nursing homes (mean +/- SD 30.3% +/- 11% versus 9.9% +/- 4%) [32].
  • SETTING: The On-line Survey Certification of Automated Records (OSCAR) was used to obtain facility characteristics from 1,057 licensed nursing homes in six states from 1995 to 1996 [33].
  • A point-prevalence survey performed among residents of eight nursing homes in Melbourne, Australia, found a rate of fecal VRE colonization of 3.1% (9/292; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-5.1), all vanB Enterococcusfaecium [34].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of Nursing Homes

  • Proportions of hip fracture patients dying during hospitalization and those discharged to nursing homes, respectively, were: White men (10.5%; 49%); Black men (9.3%; 32%); White women (5.0%; 54%); and Black women (8.2%; 30%) [35].
  • CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of the PPS in nursing homes has been associated with a decrease in the amount of rehabilitation services, targeted at those predicted to receive higher amounts and an increased frequency of providing services targeted at those predicted to be less likely to receive them [36].
  • SETTING: Multicenter study in 60 hostels (assisted living facilities) and 89 nursing homes across Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Six hundred twenty-five residents (mean age 83.4) with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels between 25 and 90 nmol/L [37].
  • BACKGROUND: Large outbreaks of influenza A and B may occur in nursing homes despite high resident vaccination rates, even when the vaccine strain is matched to the circulating strain [38].
  • METHODS: A retrospective case note audit of the admission characteristics of residents in nursing homes registered with the Manchester Health Authority who died within a 12 month period and a group of current residents matched by age, sex and length of stay [39].
