Disease relevance of Obstetrics

  • We updated 152 cases of epithelial ovarian cancer, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stages I through III, treated at the Stanford Medical Center (Stanford, Calif) with irradiation as the only postoperative therapy [1].
  • RESULTS: Increased pretreatment SCC-ag levels correlated strongly with unfavorable clinicopathologic characteristics (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics [FIGO] stages IB to IV [P < or = .00005]; stages IB and IIA: tumor size [P = .0236], deep stromal infiltration [P = .00009], and lymph node metastasis [P = .0001]) [2].
  • Long-acting prostaglandin analogues are currently used in obstetrics and are being tested in the treatment of thrombosis, inflammation, and excessive gastric acid secretion [3].
  • After adjusting for age, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, the presence of residual tumor, and the presence of invasive implants, patients whose tumors overexpressed p53 had a 4-fold increased risk of progression/ recurrence [4].
  • Concerning relation to Federation for International Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) grade, claudin 3, but not claudin 4, was significantly increased in moderately, poorly and undifferentiated adenocarcinomas compared to well-differentiated and borderline-type tumours [5].

  • The administration of dexamethasone to 7-day-old rats resulted in significant depletion of glucocorticoid receptors from the cytosol of the brain in a dose-dependent manner, beginning with the dose of 0.04 mg/kg (s.c.), i.e. a dose one order lower than the clinical dose used in obstetrics (0.4-0.5 mg/kg) [25].
  • SETTING: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine, the University of Tokushima, Japan. PATIENT(S): Semen were obtained from three fertile healthy volunteers [26].
  • By screening sera obtained from 5015 pregnant women under the care of 9 gynecology/obstetrics departments of hospitals or clinics in Nagasaki City and its surrounding areas, 187 were found to be positive for antibody against adult T-cell leukemia-associated antigen (ATLA) [27].
  • Classic pages in Obstetrics and Gynecology. A practical treatise on inflammation, ulceration, and induration of the neck of the uterus: with remarks on the value of leucorrhoea and prolapsus uteri as symptoms of uterine disease: James Henry Bennet, London, John Churchill, 1845 [28].
  • A total of 846 Pap smears in women post-treated for genital organ diseases by operation and radiation (1.7% of all those made) at the Cytological Unit, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital between April 4, 1983 and July 4, 1984, were examined [29].

Gene context of Obstetrics

  • We investigated iNOS and COX-2 expression in relation to clinical outcome in 78 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage III ovarian serous carcinoma with a low grade of differentiation (G3) [35].
  • Although high antibody levels were associated with greater survival in ovarian cancer (P=0.015), multivariate regression analysis showed that this was not a significant independent prognostic indicator after consideration of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, histological type, serum MUC1 levels and age [36].
  • Reduced PTEN expression in adenocarcinomas did not correlate with International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO) stage [37].
  • Cases with higher International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stages (IIb-IVa) exhibited stronger expression of CA IX (P = 0.035) and CA IX expression tended to be more prevalent in node-positive patients (P = 0.051) [38].
  • The immunoexpression pattern of E-cadherin was associated with International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging (P = 0.043), histologic subtype (P = 0.001), peritoneal metastasis (P = 0.006), and residual tumor (P = 0.036) [39].
