Disease relevance of Oximetry

High impact information on Oximetry

  • Using a combination of enzyme oximetry, pulse radiolysis, and chemical oxidation, the study of structurally modified dopaquinones provides firm evidence of nonenzymatic catechol formation during tyrosinase oxidation of phenols and reveals significant differences in their modes of reaction [6].
  • Left-to-right shunt (by oximetry in 16 of 17 patients) was 2.4 to 16.2 L/min, and the Qp/QS ratio was 1.4 to 4 [7].
  • Lithium phthalocyanine: a probe for electron paramagnetic resonance oximetry in viable biological systems [8].
  • Among the 33 patients recatheterized at 6 months, oximetry had detected AS in 10, and dilution curves detected AS in an additional nine (total, 58%) immediately after PMV [9].
  • MC 540-mediated photooxidation of histidine, arachidonate, and unsaturated phospholipid vesicles was assessed by spin label oximetry and shown to involve type II (singlet oxygen) chemistry [10].

Chemical compound and disease context of Oximetry

Biological context of Oximetry

  • Progress of lipid peroxidation, induced by aerobic photoexcitation of rose bengal, was monitored by the detection of lipid hydroperoxides and by electron spin resonance oximetry [16].
  • This work broadens the scope and improves the time resolution of spin-probe oximetry, a technique in which small nitroxide spin probes detect oxygen consumption via change in their relaxation properties [Froncisz, W., Lai, C.-S., & Hyde, J. S. (1985) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 82, 411-415] [17].
  • A detailed study of the kinetics of iron(II) oxidation by molecular oxygen in natural and recombinant human apoferritins has been carried out using electrode oximetry to better understand the ferroxidase activity of the protein shell [18].
  • Variables monitored during these 5-min periods included heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, mean airway pressure (Paw), end-tidal CO2 (PetCO2), pulse oximetry oxygen saturation, PaO2, and PaCO2 [19].
  • Blood pressure, heart rate, hemoglobin oxygen saturation via finger pulse oximetry, and ventilatory and occlusion pressure responses to CO2 were obtained before and 20, 40, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 360 min after administration of drug or drug combination [20].

Anatomical context of Oximetry

Associations of Oximetry with chemical compounds

  • During FOB and the 30 min thereafter, pulse oximetry values (Sp(O(2))) were significantly higher in the CPAP than the Oxygen group (95.7 +/- 1.9% versus 92.6 +/- 3.1, p = 0.02) [26].
  • Ventilation was compared in the two groups by continuous pulse oximetry, by venous blood gases on postoperative day 1 (POD 1) and by CO2 response curves [27].
  • Blood glucose levels were determined by oximetry before and 30, 60, and 120 min after the glucose administration [28].
  • To correct for damping of the S state synchronization during the flash sequence, the Kok parameters were estimated by measuring the oxygen flash pattern in situ using nitroxide-based EPR oximetry [29].
  • Oxygen consumption by tyrosinase during oxidation of the monohydric phenol substrates tyrosine and 4-hydroxyanisole (4HA) was monitored by oximetry in order to determine the stoichiometry of the reactions [30].

Gene context of Oximetry

  • All patients were monitored with EKG, NIBP and pulse oximetry (SPO2) during the operation [31].
  • Combined with continuous pulse oximetry they can be used as an alternative to arterial blood gas measurements in patients with acute exacerbations of COPD [32].
  • In 16 patients with an atrial septal defect, the Qp/Qs ration measured by oximetry ranged from 1.34 to 4.61 and by pulsed Doppler echocardiography from 1.31 to 4.46 (p = NS) [33].
  • CONCLUSIONS--The BTS pulse oximetry criteria are highly specific when positive (specificity = 100%), but may miss patients with the SAHS who have hypopnoeic episodes which cause arousal but not significant oxygen desaturation (sensitivity = 31%) [34].
  • Total hospitalization respiratory care costs for COPD patients were higher, $4,064 ($2,422-$9,572) vs. $2,342 ($1,186-$4,591), (p = .0001), and 74.4% of the median difference in cost between COPD patients and others was accounted for by spontaneous nebulizers (p = .001), metered dose inhalers (p = .01), and pulse oximetry (p = .02) [35].
