Disease relevance of MEDLINE

  • DATA SOURCES: The Cochrane search strategy was used to search MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Science Citation Index (1982-1999); Dissertation Abstracts (1987-1999); and Current Contents (1994-1999) for the terms thrombolysis, thrombolysis therapy, prehospital, and acute myocardial infarction [1].
  • DATA SOURCES: Studies published since 1982 identified through computerized searches of MEDLINE, TOXLINE, and Chemical Abstracts and a review of bibliographies of relevant articles on the subject of caffeine and cardiac arrhythmias [2].
  • METHODS: Articles describing randomized, placebo-controlled trials of cyclobenzaprine in people with fibromyalgia were obtained from Medline, EMBase, Psyclit, the Cochrane Library, and Federal Research in Progress Database. Unpublished literature and bibliographies were also reviewed [3].
  • The safety of diuretics was evaluated with regard to effects on carbohydrate, electrolyte, and lipid metabolism by seeking references from a MEDLINE search of documents published from 1966 to 1994 based on the search terms "hypertension," "human," and "hydrochlorothiazide" (HCTZ) dosed in a range of 12.5-25 mg daily [4].
  • METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PsycLIT, CINAHL, EMBASE, AIDSLINE, HEALTHSTAR, CANCERLIT, the Cochrane Library, Micromedex, Federal Research in Progress, and the references of reviewed articles, and contacted Merck, Sharpe and Dohme for English-language, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of cyclobenzaprine in adults with back pain [5].

Psychiatry related information on MEDLINE

  • DATA SOURCES--Studies were identified through a literature search of the MEDLINE and PsychINFO databases and the authors' files using sugar, sucrose, and attention deficit disorder as the search terms [6].
  • DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE from 1966 to July 1997 for alcoholism or alcohol-drinking and for CAGE, AUDIT, BMAST, TWEAK, T-ACE, MAST, SMAST, or SAAST; Citations Indexes for newer screening questionnaires and those without acronyms; and MEDLINE from 1996 to July 1997 for alcoholism or alcohol-drinking and screening [7].
  • Utilizing the search terms depressive disorders, psychiatry, diabetes, and pathophysiology in MEDLINE searches (1966-2003), this article reviews studies investigating pathophysiological alterations related to glucose intolerance and diabetes in depressed patients [8].
  • METHOD: We conducted a computerized literature search of the MEDLINE, HealthStar, Current Contents, PsychInfo, and National Library of Medicine databases to identify studies involving antidepressant, anticonvulsant, or lithium use in bipolar disorder or manic-depressive illness published from 1966 through 2000 [9].
  • English language reports were located on MEDLINE (1966-1993) with the search terms mental disorders', 'brain injury', 'eating disorders', 'epilepsy', 'suicide attempt', 'psychosurgery', with 'mortality' and 'follow-up studies', and from the reference lists of these reports [10].

High impact information on MEDLINE

  • DATA SOURCES: Electronic search of the Science Citation Index, Cochrane Library, and English-language articles from January 1966 through November 2000 indexed in MEDLINE [11].
  • DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE for all articles containing the term advanced heart failure that were published between 1980 and 2001; EMBASE was searched from 1987-1999, Best Evidence from 1991-1998, and Evidence-Based Medicine from 1995-1999 [12].
  • DATA SOURCES: A search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, PSYCHLIT, SOCIOFILE, IPA, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library databases, and bibliographies was performed for records from 1967 through August 2001 to identify relevant articles of all RCTs of interventions intended to improve adherence to self-administered medications [13].
  • To define the cardiovascular effects of COX-2 inhibitors when used for arthritis and musculoskeletal pain in patients without coronary artery disease, we performed a MEDLINE search to identify all English-language articles on use of COX-2 inhibitors published between 1998 and February 2001 [14].
  • DATA SOURCES: Database searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Sport Discuss, Health Star, Dissertation Abstracts, and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register for the period up to and including December 2000 [15].

Associations of MEDLINE with chemical compounds

  • DATA SOURCES: The MEDLINE, EMBASE, Science Citation Index, and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register databases were searched from 1997 through 2000 and a search was conducted of all recent systematic reviews to identify older studies [31].
  • METHODS: A computerized search of the English language literature on estrogen/estradiol and dietary fat intervention studies published from January 1966 through June 1998 was conducted using the MEDLINE database [32].
  • METHODS: An extensive search for randomized trials comparing epinephrine alone vs. epinephrine plus a second method was performed in MEDLINE and EMBASE and in the abstracts of the AGA Congresses between 1990 and 2002 [33].
  • METHODS: Using MEDLINE, all randomized trials comparing somatostatin with vasopressin in subjects with endoscopically documented acute esophageal variceal bleeding were identified [34].
  • DATA SOURCES: Studies published from 1983 to 1994 identified by MEDLINE literature search; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports; recent communications and abstracts; and authors' published and unpublished data [35].

Gene context of MEDLINE

  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: The discovery of prostaglandin pathways, the molecular and clinical role of COX-2 function, and the corresponding application to neoplasms were reviewed in the scientific literature (MEDLINE from 1960 to the present) [36].
  • MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the search term tuberous sclerosis, we performed a MEDLINE search of the literature identifying 3,196 articles and selected those from urological, surgical, oncological, genetic and pediatric journals [37].
  • DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted an extensive literature search of all published articles (including Medline) on preclinical data on the function of BRCA1 and BRCA2, associated tumor pathology, and the clinical management for both unaffected carriers and affected patients [38].
  • METHODS: The MEDLINE database was searched from 1985 onward using the keywords, "attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis," "AFAP," "adenomatous polyposis coli gene," and "APC gene." Additional articles were identified through the reference sections of retrieved papers [39].
  • STUDY DESIGN: A medline search was performed by using the following key words: "fetal sulfotransferase" and "sulfotransferase in fetus" with the limit of "human". The literature was collected, critically read and a written note was produced [40].
