High impact information on Retrospective Studies

  • From this retrospective study of cryptococcal infections in patients with AIDS we conclude that the addition of flucytosine to amphotericin neither enhances survival nor prevents relapse, but long-term suppressive therapy appears to benefit these patients [11].
  • To assess the risk of these complications we conducted a retrospective study based on 17 autopsied cases of alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency identified during the period 1963 to 1982 in the city of Malmö, Sweden [12].
  • CONTEXT: Plasma levels of the inflammatory biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP) predict cardiovascular risk, and retrospective studies suggest that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins) may lower CRP in a manner largely independent of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) [13].
  • In two retrospective studies, CX3CR1 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) based on statistical association of a common receptor variant named CX3CR1-M280 with lower prevalence of atherosclerosis, coronary endothelial dysfunction, and acute coronary syndromes [14].
  • We evaluated this recommendation in a retrospective study of National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project Protocol B-15, in which patients received a combination of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (AC), CMF, or AC followed by CMF [15].

Associations of Retrospective Studies with chemical compounds

  • An additional retrospective study on the relation between heparin treatment and ICH in SVT patients was based on 102 patients, 43 of whom had an ICH [31].
  • METHODS: This was a retrospective study of the etiologic factors and the clinical course of all acetaminophen-related admissions [32].
  • To obtain data on these issues, we did a retrospective study in which we analysed the concentrations of acylcarnitines in stored neonatal blood spots, and reviewed patients with high octanoylcarnitine concentrations at age 7-9 years [33].
  • In a retrospective study of 280 sera from patients presenting with cerebellar signs, seven of whom had proved positive for the typical paraneoplastic serum antibodies that were requested by the clinicians, raised concentrations of antibodies to voltage-gated calcium channels or to glutamic acid decarboxylase were detected in a further seven sera [34].
  • Retrospective studies indicated that prophylactic antibiotic therapy, particularly with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, significantly prolonged disease-free intervals to greater than 40 months (p less than 0.05) [35].
