Associations of Odds Ratio with chemical compounds

  • After adjustment for age and body-mass index, this positive association remained significant between the top quintile and the lowest quintile for serum cholesterol, with regard to the total study group (odds ratio, 2.0; 95 percent confidence limits, 1.1 and 3.6) and men only (odds ratio, 2.2; 95 percent confidence limits, 1.0 and 4.8) [31].
  • Of the 269 patients, 28 (10 percent) had plasma homocysteine levels above the 95th percentile for the controls, as compared with 13 of the controls (matched odds ratio, 2.5; 95 percent confidence interval, 1.2 to 5.2) [32].
  • The disease was associated with a 60 percent reduction in the odds of estrogen treatment (odds ratio, 0.40; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.37 to 0.43) [33].
  • The use of iron (odds ratio, 0.43; P = 0.004), calcium (odds ratio, 0.42; P = 0.05), and vitamin C (odds ratio, 0.35; P = 0.04) supplements at any time during the pregnancy and the use of multivitamins during the first six weeks (odds ratio, 0.56; P = 0.02) were associated with decreased risk [34].
  • RESULTS: The male partners of the injured women were much more likely than the male partners of control subjects to use cocaine (odds ratio, 4.4; 95 percent confidence interval, 2.3 to 8.4) and to have been arrested in the past (odds ratio, 3.1; 95 percent confidence interval, 1.8 to 5.2) [35].

Gene context of Odds Ratio

  • Maternal-fetal disparity in alleles of HLA- DRB1, DQA, and DQB occurred in 26 of 34 pregnancies characterized by remission or improvement (76 percent), as compared with 3 of 12 pregnancies characterized by active arthritis (25 percent) (odds ratio, 9.7; P = 0.003) [36].
  • RESULTS: The risk of HCC increased with increasing concentrations of testosterone (odds ratio [OR](highest versus lowest tertile) = 2.97; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.54 to 5.70; P(trend) <.001) and with increasing number of the V allele of the SRD5A2 V89L polymorphism (OR(VV versus LL genotype) = 2.47; 95% CI = 1.21 to 5.03; P(trend) =.011) [37].
  • Inheritance of the GSTT1 null genotype conferred a 4.3-fold of MDS (odds ratio 4.3, 95% CI 2.5-7.4, p < 0.00001) [38].
  • Hepatitis C virus-seropositive whites with the RANTES -403-A allele were less likely to have severe hepatic inflammation compared with those without (odds ratio, 0.34; P = 0.03) [39].
  • In multivariate analysis, the CCR5 promoter 59029 -A allele was marginally associated with a sustained response to interferon therapy (odds ratio, 3.07; P = 0.048) [39].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of Odds Ratio

  • In the control group, 23 patients (16.4 percent) had more than one readmission, as compared with 9 patients (6.3 percent) in the treatment group (risk ratio, 0.39; P = 0.01) [40].
  • Vitamin A supplementation to hospitalized measles patients was highly protective against mortality (DerSimonian and Laird odds ratio, 0.39; 95% confidence interval, 0.22 to 0.66; P = .0004) (part 1 of the meta-analysis) [41].
  • In the full analysis, an increased risk of marked lung fibrosis was found again for patients who received tamoxifen simultaneously with radiotherapy (with patients receiving radiotherapy alone as the referent, odds ratio = 2.9; 95% CI = 1.3-6.3; P = .007) [42].
  • Skin-prick tests and blood tests showed that the children from Steiner schools had lower prevalence of atopy than controls (odds ratio 0.62 [95% CI 0.43-0.91]) [43].
  • In the 6 months before lumbar puncture, 2 of 18 cases (11%) and 26 of 72 controls (36%) were exposed to fluconazole, a finding that gives a matched odds ratio (adjusted for race, route of HIV infection, and CD4 count) of 0.08 (95% CI 0.01-0.84; p = 0.035) and indicates a 92% protective efficacy [44].
